One of the hardest things to do is
to disassociate people who are like toxic waste when you start your own business.
The most important thing that anyone can do is build a network of people who are
like minded and the hardest part comes with you have to use tactfulness from
people who wish to sabotage your plans. These people will do everything they
can to steal your customers and your prospects. They may even go online and say
something to sabotage your business prospects. Most of all, toxic people can do
a lot of damage to your reputation and business overall.
Many years ago, I came across a gentleman who was
very toxic to my business and even stole my sales leads and my customers. It
was heart wrenching to see the very person I had worked with the over years to take
something I had built from scratch and destroy it. It was like being eaten away
like a parasite that feeds until it destroys the host. I had started little IT
company several years ago. It was doing ok. Over time, I discovered that who
you associate with does matter. It requires the ability to be able trust. My first
business was my first attempt at being an owner and didn’t know a lot starting
out. Finally, I was able to disassociate myself from him and start clean.
The hardest thing is to face the fact that these
people are secretly unhelpful, unsupportive,
disrespectful, envious, resentful, dysfunctional or outright damaging to you or
even your business venture. Family can be toxic in certain instances
to a business. There are times where you have to compartmentalize a family
member in the sphere of just family. I have worked with family members in the
past and it didn’t always work out. Business is business. Family is family. The
needs of the business are important to advance the goals and ideas to be successful.
Even though it is hard, sometimes, you have to tell a family member in a way
where the needs of the business have to come first in the sphere of business.
Also, it is telling your loved ones that you have not stopped loving and caring
about them. But, it has to be done where the business is different than family.
When I moved away from my loved ones, it was for the best. When I did get away from those attitudes that did impacted what I was trying to accomplish, I saw things got better. Most of
all, it is keeping those people away
from your venture and not allowing personal feelings to get in the way of
growing and learning.
These people may not be
evil nor do they have the intent of being evil.
Controlling the associations is important in growing the venture. The
associations have to be put in their proper prospective. It is about building
stronger associations that build you up and not tear you down. Sometimes, you
have to reduce the amount of time spending on the weaker associations. The reason is
that you want to be empowered by ideas and attitudes that are enriching. The
people that are toxic do not have a clue of what is needed and won’t response
in a proper manner. Lessening your time around them is the key. When it is the best
to let go of those associations, it is just that time. Lastly, it is done with
the idea of growing as human beings that want to be successful.
Just surrounding yourself
with the right people will do more to build up self-esteem and alleviate
doubts. It is like the quote “Did you get the memo?" Because you want let
go of the people that can hurt you as an entrepreneur and re-ignite the fires
of success along the way. Building a network of success minded people starts by
looking at a group online or at your local Chamber of Commerce. Therefore, this
is where a majority people go.
Always build those associations that build
you up in the end. Networking, networking and more networking with the right
people can bring what others value most. This is initiative and desire to succeed
that business people value. I know from my own experience I value initiative
and like it when see being done. I reward those who do carry out the
initiative. Growth leads to better opportunities and better rewards. Most of
all, anyone who chooses wisely their associations will profit by growing as a
person and better rewards in the long run.
